A Biblical Perspective on Emotions

Prayer in Church Pew2

EMOTIONS CAN LEAD US TO SIN

Genesis 4:2-5 (NRSV) 2  Next she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the ground. 3  In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4  and Abel for his part brought of the firstlings of his flock, their fat portions. And the LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, 5  but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

CAREFULLY GUARD YOUR EMOTIONS

Proverbs 4:23 (GW) Guard your heart more than anything else, because the source of your life flows from it.

EMOTIONS CAN CRUSH US

Proverbs 15:13 (GW) A joyful heart makes a cheerful face, but with a heartache comes depression.

DO NOT BE LED BY EMOTIONS

Proverbs 19:2 (NET1) It is dangerous to have zeal without knowledge, and the one who acts hastily makes poor choices.

SOME EMOTIONS CAN BE SINFUL

Ephesians 4:31 (NET1) You must put away every kind of bitterness, anger, wrath, quarreling, and evil, slanderous talk.

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

Emotion cannot be cut out of life. No intelligent person would think of saying, "Let's do away with all emotion." Some critics are suspicious of any conversion that does not take place in a refrigerator. There are many dangers in false emotionalism, but that does not rule out true emotion and depth of feeling. Emotion may vary in religious experience. Some people are stoical and others are demonstrative, but the feeling will be there. There is going to be a tug at the heart.
