The God of the Least of These

Jesus Shadow

Exodus 22:21-23 (NASB) 21  "You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. 22  "You shall not afflict any widow or orphan. 23  "If you afflict him at all, and if he does cry out to Me, I will surely hear his cry.

Psalm 68:5 (NASB) A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, Is God in His holy habitation.

Psalm 146:9 (NASB) The LORD protects the strangers; He supports the fatherless and the widow, But He thwarts the way of the wicked.

Matthew 25:34-40 (NIV) 34  "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35  For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36  I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' 37  "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38  When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39  When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' 40  "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'"

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT:  One Saturday morning as I was beginning to prepare a lecture (on poverty!), a poor man came into my office and asked for five dollars. He was drinking. He had no food, no job, no home. The Christ of the poor confronted me in this man. But I didn't have the time, I said. I had to prepare a lecture on the Christian view of poverty. I did give him a couple of dollars, but that was not what he needed. He needed somebody to talk to, somebody to love him. He needed my time. He needed me. But I was too busy. "Inasmuch as you did it not to the least: of these, you did it not...."
