A Church Built Upon the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 3:12-14 (NIV) 12  If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13  his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. 14  If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward.

1 Thessalonians 2:4-6 (NIV) 4  On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts. 5  You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed--God is our witness. 6  We were not looking for praise from men, not from you or anyone else.

A Christian congregation can survive and often appear to prosper in the community by the exercise of human talent and without any touch from the Holy Spirit. But it is simply religious activity, and the dear people will not know anything better until the great and terrible day when our self-employed talents are burned with fire and only what was wrought by the Holy Spirit will stand.  A.
