God’s Love of the Humble

Psalm 138:6 (NIV) Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar.

Proverbs 11:2 (NIV) When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.

Isaiah 57:15 (NIV)  For this is what the high and lofty One says-- he who lives forever, whose name is holy: "I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.

Matthew 23:12 (NIV)  For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

James 4:6 (NIV)  But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."

1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV) 6  Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7  Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

What is humility? It is that habitual quality whereby we live in the truth of things: the truth that we are creatures and not the Creator; the truth that our life is a composite of good and evil, light and darkness; the truth that in our littleness we have been given extravagant dignity... Humility is saying a radical "yes" to the human condition.—Robert F. Morneau, Humility, in Christianity Today, "Reflections," Vol. 44, no. 9. - Today's Best Illustrations – Volume 5.
