God’s Word

Proverbs 6:23 (NIV)  For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light, and the corrections of discipline are the way to life,

Psalm 119:129-131 (NIV) 129 Your statutes are wonderful; therefore I obey them. 130  The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. 131  I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands.

1 Peter 2:1-3 (NIV) 1  Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2  Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3  now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

John 5:39-40 (NIV) 39  You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, 40  yet you refuse to come to me to have life.

2 Timothy 3:14-17 (NIV) 14  But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15  and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16  All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17  so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

It is a common temptation of Satan to make us give up the reading of the Word and prayer when our enjoyment is gone; as if it were of no use to read the scriptures when we do not enjoy them, and as if it were no use to pray when we have no spirit of prayer. The truth is that, in order to enjoy the Word, we ought to continue to read it, and the way to obtain a spirit of prayer is to continue praying. The less we read the Word of God, the less we desire to read it, and the less we pray, the less we desire to pray.—George Muller in A Narrative of Some of the Lord's Dealings with George Muller.
